Sea Captains Top Northeast 5-2

Nov 21, 2022

The Norwich Sea Captains continued their strong play with a 5-2 victory over the Northeast Generals in North American 3 Hockey League (NA3HL) action at the New England Sports Village in Attleboro, MA on Sunday afternoon, November 20. Norwich scored 4:31 into play and never relinquished their lead on the way to the win. Teagen Beier, Jack Kinahan and Jacob Begich each recorded two points apiece to lead the offense while Brendan Pellerito made 39 saves to backstop the Sea Captains and earn the win in goal.

Beier was the first of five Norwich players to score when he pounced on a loose puck after a misplay by the Northeast goaltender. He stole the puck and banged it through the five hole for the only first period goal. The Sea Captains scored twice in the second period to extend their lead to 3-0. Kinahan’s power play goal at 7:10 of the middle stanza was a laser into the upper corner of the net that eluded the Generals’ goalie’s catching mitt. Begich and Erik Masengill assisted on the goal. A gorgeous passing play capped by a nifty finish from Angelo Donzella put the Sea Captains ahead by three with 1:12 left in the second. Sava Makarenko got a drop pass from Donzella and the ran a give and go play with Beier before freezing the Northeast goaltender and then sliding the puck to Donzella at the back door where the goal scorer was able to complete the play.

1:41 into the third period the Norwich power play clicked again as Begich fed Kinahan who rifled a perfect pass that was deftly deflected into the goal by Nicolas Piluso. The Generals pushed back and tallied two goals in just under five minutes to cut the Norwich lead to 4-2, but Makarenko’s goal with 2:25 left to play gave the Sea Captains some needed insurance to protect their lead. After a big save from Pellerito, Jameson Bain won the ensuing defensive zone faceoff before Makarenko sped through the neutral zone and wheeled around the net where his power move to the goal slid into the far corner to make the game 5-2.

Norwich scored twice on the power play and the Sea Captains penalty kill held the Northeast power play scoreless in three opportunities. Pellerito was strong throughout the game, making 26 saves through the first two periods as his team built their lead and then 13 in the third to keep the Generals at bay as they tried to battle back.

Beier commented on his team’s effort saying, “This was a really good win for our team. Getting on the scoreboard first was crucial. We played exceptionally well throughout the game and we believe that the momentum from our recent strong play will help us continue to have success.”
