The Norwich Sea Captains are thrilled to announce that 2003 defenseman Darrell Smith has signed with the club for their inaugural season in the North American 3 Hockey League. A native of Wichita, KS, Smith played for the Wichita Jr Thunder. Last year he played for the organization’s high school team. During the 2019-20 season he patrolled the blue line for the high school team and also appeared in ten games for the Western States Hockey League squad. The sturdy two-way defenseman plays a smart game with a high compete level. Smith will be a welcome addition to the Norwich defensive corps.

Smith commented on his decision to sign with Norwich saying, “I decided to join the Sea Captains because I liked Coach Cunningham’s attitude and outlook toward my development as a player. I am looking forward to having a unique and exciting experience playing for a new team on the east coast!”

“Darrell is another player that I had the good fortune to work with this past May at the CCM Showcase. His competitiveness and true desire to learn drew me to Darrell right away. As we got to know each other better throughout the summer it became clear to me that he would be a great fit for our inaugural team here in Norwich. I am eager to work with Darrell this season and to watch his game develop,” said head coach Kevin Cunningham.

The Norwich Sea Captains begin their first season in the NA3HL when they open with a two game series against the Long Beach Sharks on Long Island Saturday and Sunday, September 25 and 26. The next weekend the Sea Captains will open their home slate when they host the Bay State Bobcats on Saturday, October 2. Season tickets for Norwich’s home games at the RoseGarden Ice Arena are on sale now and can be purchased HERE.
